Over the past few months, I’ve had the opportunity to speak with founders, enterprise leaders, investors, educators, policymakers, and community builders across Greater Philadelphia.
One theme keeps emerging:
This isn’t just another technology cycle.
Artificial intelligence represents one of the most significant economic opportunities of our generation.
And Greater Philadelphia has a real opportunity to lead.

When people think about AI, the conversation often focuses on models, tools, and productivity gains. Those things matter. But what excites me most is something bigger.
AI is creating an opportunity to build new companies, create high-quality jobs, strengthen existing industries, accelerate research commercialization, and expand economic opportunity throughout our region.
The question isn’t whether AI will reshape the economy.
The question is whether Philadelphia will help shape that future—or simply consume what others build.
Why Philadelphia Has a Right to Win
For years, conversations about innovation have centered around a handful of coastal technology hubs.
But the ingredients required to build successful enterprise AI companies look very different than what was required during previous technology waves.
Enterprise AI thrives where complex industries operate.
Greater Philadelphia sits at the intersection of many of them:
• Healthcare and life sciences
• Financial services
• Supply chain and logistics
• Energy and infrastructure
• Manufacturing and industrial operations
These industries generate some of the hardest problems worth solving—and some of the largest opportunities for AI adoption.
We also benefit from world-class universities, leading healthcare institutions, major corporate employers, a growing startup ecosystem, and access to nearly 40% of U.S. GDP within a few hours’ reach.
The foundation already exists.
What has often been missing is coordination.
The Opportunity in Front of Us
No single organization can build an AI ecosystem - startups, universities, corporations, government, investors.
Success requires all of them.
The regions that win in AI won’t necessarily be the ones with the most talent or capital. They will be the regions that can align their stakeholders around a shared vision and work together to execute against it.
That’s why convening matters. It’s why relationships matter. And it’s why building bridges between people who don’t typically sit at the same table matters.
Why Philly Builds AI Exists
Philly Builds AI was created around a simple belief:
The future of our region will be stronger if we work together than if we work alone.
Our role is not to replace the incredible organizations already supporting innovation throughout Greater Philadelphia.
Our role is to help connect them. To convene leaders across sectors. To create opportunities for collaboration. To elevate the stories, companies, talent, and institutions already doing remarkable work. And to help ensure that the economic benefits created by AI are felt broadly across our region.
This is not a short-term initiative. It’s long-term ecosystem building.
The work will require builders, believers, and partners from every corner of Greater Philadelphia.
The opportunity is too important—and too large—for any one organization to tackle alone.
What’s Next
In the coming months, we’ll be sharing insights from across the ecosystem, highlighting the people and organizations helping shape Philadelphia’s AI future, and creating more opportunities for meaningful connections between startups, enterprises, investors, academia, government, and community leaders.
If you’re building, investing, researching, teaching, leading, or simply curious about how AI will shape our region’s future, we’d love to have you involved.
The future of AI won’t be built by technology alone.
It will be built by people.
And we’re fortunate to have some of the best people in the world right here in Greater Philadelphia.
